KUMON FIRST STEPS WORKBOOKS

25 APRIL 2010, SUNDAY

On 18 April 2010, when we were at Gramedia Bookstore in the Mines Shopping Mall, I spotted this range of activities books for toddlers ages two and above…the Kumon First Steps Workbooks. As stated, these First Steps Workbooks are specially designed for children who have not yet mastered the use of a pencil and it will help them to develop find motor control skills and also pencil control through coloring, folding, pasting and paper cutting. This range of workbooks consists of 4 titles namely Let’s Color!, Let’s Fold!, Let’s Cut Paper! and Let’s Sticker & Paste! with very clear step-by-step instruction and notes to parents on how to make use of the book.

To give it a try, I bought the Let’s Color and Let’s Sticker & Paste workbooks for Kit boy. I started off with the coloring workbook last Tuesday and it seems to be working very well after following strictly to their guidelines. Firstly, cut out the exercise sheet from the workbook and placed it on the study table together with a box of crayon in front of the kid. Then, slowly and clearly explain to our little one what they need to do.

For example, the first exercise from Let’s Color workbook (Worksheet No. 1 - Breakfast Time), Kit boy is require to draw some ketchup on the omelet and in order to prevent him from scribbling all over the worksheet, that’s what he normally does, I actually told him a short story before allowing him to start scribbling. And to my surprise, for the very first time, Kit boy only scribbled on the allocated area (the omelet) as what I have told him; discounted off those ‘spilled-over’ ketchup on the table. The end result was fantastic. Since then, every alternate day, I’ll let Kit boy to do a new worksheet and he seems to be improving.

Worksheet No. 1 - Breakfast Time!

Worksheet No. 2 - Bring on the Pasta

For sure, I will buy the other 2 titles to complete the whole range for Kit boy even though it is quite expensive, selling at RM27.23 for a small workbook but to me, it really worth the price. Highly recommended and should give it a try because you will never know that your little toddler can actually follow instruction to do some simple exercise if you never try.
